Should the Sub instruction really read
"subtracts reg b from reg a and stores the results in reg d" ?

Think of the instruction sub $2, $3, $4

To me that means, take $2, subtract $3 from it, and store it in $4.

Subtract the contents of register A from register B and store the result in D
